Tis the season

To everything there is a season and for me it is the time of harvest and canning. My garden has not done well since I have started my job and so I have gone elsewhere to pick up produce.
On Thursday I picked up a gunny sack full of corn and Beatrice came home with me to help me get it put up before I had to go to work. For her help I gave her 1 & 1/2 dozen cobs of corn and about three quarts of Raspberries. We now have Raspberries and corn on the cob in the freezer. It won't be long and I'll have an abundance of apples to process as well. My tomatoes are ripening nicely and the beans will soon be on the vine. I planted them kind of late but I hope that I will get something from them yet this season. It was too hot and dry when the Broccoli came to a head and it went right into the bloom stage without much warning so that is pretty much a lost cause as is the Cauliflower. In the long run it is probably okay though as otherwise I'd be stressing over not getting enough done up here at home.
I should have a good grape crop this year if I can keep the chickens out of the vines. It is fun to watch them jump up to get the grapes and I don't believe that I enjoy the grape jelly as much as I enjoy watching them crazy birds jump for the grapes.
We've had a lot of rain and cool weather this past week and so I have not spent much time in the garden and it is showing it. That is going to have to change this week. I need to get the Strawberries back into rows but I'll have to uncover them from all the grass that has grown up around them. The old Raspberry canes need to be pruned out as well.
All in time!
It's nearing the midnight hour and I have work in the morning so I need to go get some shut eye. Have a great Sunday!

  1. I love fresh garden produce too! Something about the fact that you grow it yourself - and it's practically free - that just makes it taste even better!

  2. Way to go, mom. I never realized how much I like haveing a garden until we didn't get one this summer. Ironically, I don't like to spend much time in one, but I think there are fewer beautiful things than a well-grown garden. I think you should sit outside by the grape vines one night and squirt your chickens with a water gun every time they try to eat your grapes. I think that would be quality family entertainment.
