Yesterday afternoon I went in to the fairgrounds to see how all of my entries fared against all the competition. I came away with a couple of surprises and a whole lot of excitement!
Here are the results!
In the Egg Cake Class, which includes the Angel, Sponge and Chiffon Cakes my Angel took Class Champion and the Grand Champion for all cakes, which include the above three and all of the class 5 cakes, which are the Applesauce, the Chocolate, the Oatmeal, the White and the Yellow Cakes. I am still excited!!!
In the Yeast Bread Class, which include the White, the Whole Wheat and the Multi Grain Breads my Wheat Bread took Class Champion and Grand Champion for all classes of breads, which include four kinds of Sweet Doughs and six kinds of Quick Breads. I was really excited about this one as I have only received third place for my white bread before and a first place for my banana bread but to take both the class champion and the grand champion for all the breads is a big accomplishment. I don't mean to brag but it sure made me happy!
My Chocolate Chip cookies didn't do anything except sit on their plate and beg to be eaten. They tasted fantastic but they did not look like the typical chocholate chip cookie. I don't mind though because they slide down real well. Beatrice got 2nd place! Congratulations to her!!!
My Raspberry Jam was the biggest surprise of all though! I have never entered a Jam before but have always done quite well in the Soft Spread Cataory. I did not expect to get anything for the Jam as I felt that it did not have a firm enough set to it. The color was good and the taste was excellent but it was too weepy, or so I thought. The panel of Judges thought differently though! They gave it second place only because I had too much head space in the jar. Had I filled the jar just an eigth of an inch more it would have received the first place ribbon.
My mistake was that I skimmed the foam from the jar and not from the pan before filling the jar. Next year I'm coming back to claim the title! OOOOO that sounded tooo greedy:( .
So that is my haul for this years fair. I will receive five dollars for each first place ribbon and three for my second place ribbon. For me it is not about the money but about how I am improving my baking and canning skills. I definetly have room to improve as evidence by my challenge with the Popovers but I now have a year to get them right.
It has been a good fair and tonight Dad and I will go to enjoy the rest of the fair together.
